European Union once again missed its chance to protect climate!

The meeting of the European leaders in Brussels did not result in an unconditional increase of the target to reduce emissions from 20 to 30%. The lack of this decision diminishes the chance to adopt adequate reduction targets by other developed countries.     
Anti-award for Poland in Copenhagen!

Today in Copenhagen where the Climate Summit - one of the most important UN meetings in recent decades - takes place Poland was ‘honoured’ with an embarrassing prize, the so-called „Fossil of the day”. This award was granted to Poland by more than 450 NGOs from around the world, all members of Climate Action Network.

During today’s opening session of the UN Climate Conference (COP 15) in Copenhagen, Danish Prime Minister Lars Lřkke Rasmussen and Polish Minister of Environment Maciej Nowicki emphasised that all countries are determined to conclude the negotiations with a success. However, according to Climate Coalition, if such declarations are not followed by just, ambitious and binding commitments by developed countries, it will a political failure with one of the most serious consequences.

The agreement that is to be signed during the Climate Conference to be held in Copenhagen in 5 days will be an effective tool to tackle climate change only if it includes legally binding and ambitious commitments of emission reduction by rich countries and if it grants support for those who cannot deal with consequences of climate change alone. In the today’s position, Climate Coalition calls for fulfilling these conditions.

One week ahead of crucial climate change talks in Copenhagen, a new study released today by Stockholm Environment Institute in partnership with Friends of the Earth Europe proves for the first time that Europe could double its greenhouse gas emission reduction target for 2020.
     
Commissioner for Climate and Energy Package wanted immediately

Climate Coalition demands an immediate appointment of a governmental commissioner for achieving goals of the Climate and Energy Package. The commissioner would coordinate activities of the ministries responsible for elements of the Package and provide entrepreneurs with detailed information on its potential impact on economy. It will result in its effective implementation and making use of chances to increase economic innovativeness that it brings along.
