Polish Presidency in EU: chance for a change of Poland's image as an antagonistic to EU's climate policy

On the eve of start of the Polish EU Presidency more than 140 European civil society organisations – members of Climate Action Network Europe – have backed the call of Polish Climate Coalition to the upcoming EU Presidency.
Climate Action Network supported the demands outlined in a memorandum of the Polish Climate Coalition, association of NGOs working on climate and energy issues.
Climate groups are unanimously calling on Poland to support a 30 percent EU climate target and to bring Europe on track with its target for energy savings
“By steering an EU 30 per cent climate debate towards options supporting green investments in Central and Eastern Europe the EU Presidency gives Poland the chance to promote solutions that the whole Europe can benefit from. This would be a win-win solution for the climate, European competitiveness and all new EU Member States at the same time” – said Tomas Wyns, Policy Coordinator at Climate Action Network Europe.
Last week’s EU Environment Council in Luxembourg. Poland was isolated by alone opposing adoption of the Council Conclusions welcoming the 2050 Roadmap and recognising that meeting 20 percent energy saving target would result in 25 percent greenhouse gas emission cuts within the EU.
“The EU Presidency offers Poland a chance to change the shocking impression it made last week. 26 EU Members States agreed that climate protection is in their own economic interest. Poland cannot keep ignoring this fact. We expect Poland to constructively join the debate about more EU climate ambition” – said Zbigniew Karaczun, Polish Climate Coalition Director.
The memorandum to the Polsih Presidency is available here.
