First Edition

The first edition of Climate Coalition's competition „Media with climate“ was finalized in February 2009. It selected the most reliable and interesting media works that touched upon climate change and protection, especially the role of UN Conference on Climate Change COP 14 which took place in December 2008 in Poland.

Aim of the competition was to promote climate change issues in Polish media in preparation to UN Climate Change Conference COP 14. It was announced at the beginning of September 2008 by press advertisments, invitations sent to journalists and editorial offices and information published on the website of the Coalition. Press, radio and tv journalists could participate provided they had no direct links to the Coalition. The competition was intensifically promoted in local and student media in order to reach a broad audience across the whole country.

Popularity of the competition among Polish journalists was proven by the fact, that there were over 120 articles, auditions and TV programmes published or broadcasted from September to Decemeber 2008 submitted. They concerned:
  • scientific research on the process of climate change, its causes and consequences,
  • possibilities of individual engagement in climate protection, i.e. energy saving,
  • course of international climate negotiations,
  • preparation of Polish authorities for UN Conference on Climate Change COP 14.

Materials submitted to the competition posed high standard of journalism. Jury, consisting of representatives of Climate Coalition and EKOS Environmental Publicists Club, had a tough choice to make. They decided to rank the works according to six criteria:
  • concerning form:
    • reliability – separating information from opinions and commentaries allowing a clear distinction between facts and their interpretations, which provides the audience with objective, truthful information on all different stances, especially in case of controversial issues,
    • informative value – relying on credible and verified sources of information and opinions of respected specialists, terminological correctness and framing information in a broader context,
    • formal qualities - style, vocabulary or narration, clarity of messages, consistency of argument, simplicity and brevity which however does not cause ommissions of important facts and circumstances.
  • concerning content:
    • level of compatibility with topics and aims of the competition,
    • educational value, contribution to awareness building process in the society and promotion of proclimate attitudes,
    • aptness and originality in presentation of the topic.

On the basis of these criteria 21 works with the highest score were selected. Second voting was secret and preceded with vivid discussion. As a result, main prize was given to two works ex aequo: an article „Paradise will disappear soon“ („Raj za chwilę zginie“) by Natalia Mazur and Violetta Szostak from Polish daily Gazeta Wyborcza and an audition „A scientific evening with the First Program – around climate“ („Naukowy Wieczor z Jedynka – wokol klimatu“)  by Dorota Truszczak from the First Programme of the Polish Radio. They have received 9 000 PLN each. The jury granted also three other prizes in the amount of 2000 PLN each, won by Tomasz Ulanowski from Gazeta Wyborcza, Ewa Podolska from TOK FM Radio and Aldona Zyśk from The Environment biweekly. Works by Adam Moczulski (Sfera Radio), Kalina Olejniczak (Merkury Radio), Andrzej Paplinski (Murator), Jaroslaw Puszko (Planeta Mazury FM Radio) and Aleksandra Stanislawska (Rzeczpospolita) were indicated as nominated to the awards.

Ceremony of presenting the awards was held on 25th February in KOM Restaurant, Warsaw. It was chaired by a well-known tv journalist and weather forecast presenter, Mr. Jaroslaw Kret. Awards were presented by Mrs Krystyna Forowicz, president of the jury, a journalist, vicepresident of EKOS Environmental Publicists Club and Mr Zbigniew Karaczun, Ph. d., Climate Coalition expert, president of Polish Ecological Club Mazovian Branch.

Zbigniew Karaczun, from Polish Ecological Club Mazovian Brunch which is responsible for the Climate Coalition Secretariat, handed in special awards for editorial offices of TOK FM Radio and Gazeta Wyborcza in Poznan, for particular contribution to promotion of climate change and protection issues. Explaining the choice of awarded media, he claimed that 'knowledge and awareness of the issue of climate change are very low among Polish society. This is the reason why we have decided to additionally award those who have done the most to raise them'.

Significant interest in participation in the competition resulted in developing knowledge on climate change and improving substantial value of the works of journalists. Moreover, it contributed indirectly to promotion of cooperation between media and civil society sectors and social awareness increase. With regard for these consequences, the Coalition decided to continue organizing the competition in the following years.
